The State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, expressed the
token of appreciation on Friday, July 31, 2015, during the official Pull-Out Ceremony
in honour of the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police at the Uyo Township
Stadium.
Represented by his deputy, Mr. Moses Ekpo, the State
Governor described Commissioner Achong as one of Nigeria’s brilliant officers
in recent time whose
tour of duty to the state came at a time when there was
utmost need to rid the state of criminality.
In his words: “This ceremony underscores the
importance and appreciation of the wonderful work which our amiable Police
Commissioner has done in making Akwa Ibom State a peaceful and stable state.”
Governor Emmanuel enjoined the retired Police
Commissioner not to misconstrue the Pull-Out Ceremony as his last assignment in
his career and service to the nation, but to allow the event to encourage him
to continually use his wealth of experience in the service of his fatherland.
He congratulated Commissioner Achong for his
steadfastness in bringing to a peaceful closure and on a higher platform, a
career that had its origin in a very humble beginning.
In his farewell address, the outgoing Commissioner of
Police, who became the 19th Police Commissioner deployed to the state with 35
successful years in the service, acknowledged the grace of God upon his life
which he noted as being the reason for his rise to the rank of a Police
Commissioner.
Achong paid glowing tributes to the former Governor of
the state, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and his predecessor, Governor Emmanuel,
for providing the necessary mercenary and tools for effective policing throughout
his stay in the state.
The retired Commissioner of Police specifically applauded
Governor Emmanuel for his passion towards maintaining peace and security, for
the smooth take-off and successful flow of his industrialization drive in the
state.
He thanked his family and Akwa Ibom people for their
support throughout his service years in the state and solicited same for his
successor so as to continually check crimes in the state.
“I want to use this opportunity to thank the good
people of Akwa Ibom State for the support they have given to me for the period
I have been here. Without your support, it couldn’t have been possible and may
you continue to assist and support the incoming Commissioner of Police.”
Achong, who noted that out of the 153 of them that
were engaged in August, 1980, as a Cadet Inspector only 43 are alive to be celebrated
in various states of the federation, moved for a minute silent in honour of his
colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty.
In his remarks, the Deputy Police Commissioner in the
state, DCP Dazuki Ghaladangi, said Achong would be remembered in the Force as a
man of his words who believed in action and results.
The ceremony, which was a tradition of the Nigerian
Police Force, commenced with a parade by the Guard of Honour commanded by the Deputy
Superintendent of Police (DSP), Bassey Duke, and also witnessed a heavy flow of
officers of the Nigerian Police Force, guests, senior citizens of the state,
members of the State Executive Council, National and State Assembly members who
were there to honour the outgoing Police Commissioner
