The Akwa Ibom State Government has charged the United States
Agency for International Development (USAID) to increase the number of local
government areas in the state benefiting from its HIV/AIDS programme.
Governor Udom Emmanuel gave the charge on Wednesday at
Government House, Uyo, when the agency visited him for an advocacy meeting in
line with their 2015 programme outline for the state.
Represented by his deputy, Mr. Moses Ekpo, the State Governor
assured USAID of government support in the fight against HIV/AIDS and stated
the readiness of his administration to welcome efforts that will compliment the
goals and cardinal agenda of his leadership.
He also appealed for necessary assistance from international
donor agencies in combating the menace of the dreaded disease and promised to
work with USAID through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare to aid
the organization in achieving its objective in the state.
The Governor stated the USAID has robust programmes that
could bring succor to vulnerable children and women in the state, adding that
the looked forward to having sufficient succor the organization.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Women Affairs and
Social Welfare, Mrs. Cecilia Inyang, said the Ministry was receptive of the
programmes and assured that personnel will be made available for the exercise.
Earlier, USAID representative, Mrs. Susan Coleman, said they
were in the state to acquaint the Governor with programmes on HIV/AIDS and
Tuberculosis and to introduce the newest project orphans and vulnerable
children in the state as well as indicate effort to mitigate the impact of the
virus in the state.
