Oron Taditional Rulers Place Injunction on Disgruntled Youths

- Extol Buhari for Re-appointing Dr. Joshua Okpo as Rector of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron

Following the wanton character assassination on the integrity of the Rector of Maritime Academy in Oron, Ambassador Joshua Okpo by one Francis Otoro, the Oron Traditional Rulers Council says it will not fold hands and watch as the uprightness of the re-appointed Rector is battered by some recalcitrant youths in the area, insisting that, it will invoke traditional curses upon the culprit(s), if caution is not well taken.

In an enlarged media briefing in his palace in Oron, the Paramount Ruler of Oron, HRM Offong Odiong Akan, who incidentally is the Chairman Oron Traditional Rulers Council wondered why some youths have surrendered themselves to be used as gap stop by selfish and aggrieved politicians in the area.

He scored the re-appointed Rector of the Maritime Academy high, noting that, his first tenure has so far witnessed massive infrastructural renaissance and all round academy growth in the institution.
“We are aware of the antics of hate campaigns by some ill-informed, misguided, and sponsored youths, especially the latest online publication by one Francis Otioro under the guise of Oro Nation Amalgamated Force and Oro Youth Movement (OYOM) to drag the hard earned image of the Rector in the mud, using falsehood and character assassination. The Royal fathers would not fold their arms and watch disgruntled elements destroy the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, the only Federal presence in Oro Nation, and we may be tempted to invoke traditional curse upon recalcitrant youths and their co-travelers.

“Under his four year tenure, he has been able to pull the academy from the jaw and shackle of underdevelopment and ethnic trapping, provision of 24-hours power and water supply; the academy now enjoys improved and enhanced hostel facilities for male and female cadets; the procurement. Installation and fully operation of state-of-the-art stimulator for practical training of cadets and staff, ICT equipment, completion of inherited capital projects, prudent management of resources, priority attention to staff welfare, introduction of jogging to stay fit for higher productivity, introduction of solemn assembly to seek the face of God in the affairs of the academy, constituted the host Community Relation Committee…’

The release reads in part.

The Oron Monarchs commended the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the re-appointment of Ambassador Okpo, describing the Rector as a square peg in a square hole.
He urged the Federal Government to look inward into the various pressing problems of the academy and proffer lasting solutions.

“The cherry news of the re-appointment of this astute, versatile, result oriented and people friendly administrator, did not come to us as a surprise in view of his impressive achievements, dotting the landscape of the Academy in the last four years.

“The Oron people view this well-informed decision of Mr. President to re-appoint Ambassador Joshua Okpo, as a best thing that has happened to the maritime industry and by extension, the academy which, to our minds, would afford Ambassador Okpo, an ample opportunity to consolidate and surpass his massive infrastructural renaissance and other developmental projects spread across the length and breadth of the academy.

“We are appealing to the Federal Government to procure a training ship for the academy and enable its cadets experience sea time. We also appeal to the Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to increase its funding to the academy from the current 5 percent to at least 10 to assist in addressing challenges plaguing the academy. We are appealing to the Federal Ministry of Commence to direct all foreign and indigenous vessels and ship owners as well as importers operating within Nigeria to engage at least five cadets of the academy on sea time” The monarch pleaded.

HRM Akan, pledged the readiness and the determination of the entire traditional rulers in the area to work with the re-appointed Rector to ensure maximum productivity, and warned politician to desist from playing politics in the higher institution, adding that, the Academy was owned by the Federal not the State Government.
