Akwa Ibom and Its Environs to Witness Short Supply of Electricity

The Board and Management of Ibom Power Company hereby inform the general public of a disruption in gas supply to Ibom Power Plant.

This is due to a project to integrate existing gas wells by Seven Energy at their Uqua facility in Esit Eket. The project will allow Seven Energy to double their capacity and thus enhance gas supply reliability to Ibom Power and other companies within the region.

This project will result in a shut-down expected to last for about 5 days, and has caused a planned outage of Unit #3 at Ibom Power Plant.

Consequently, Eket, Uyo, Itu and Calabar transmission substations serving Akwa Ibom and parts of Cross River States will depend on about 60MW supply from the National Grid.

It should be noted that Ibom Power Plant alone currently generates over 110MW under normal conditions while Akwa Ibom State alone can utilize up to 160MW.

Any inconveniences this disruption may cause Akwa Ibom State costumers is regretted as we are working with Seven Energy and other private sector stakeholders to ensure timely restoration for improved power supply in the State.

[LG Reports] MKPAT ENIN DECIDES: "Ukpum Minya Ward IV Lays Claim to Chairmanship"

By Bobby Brown

As the current local governments’ administration in the state is winding down to give way for the emergence of a new administration, the people of Ukpum Minya Ward IV in Mkpat Enin local government solicits support from other clans/wards in 'chairmanship' of the local government come next local government elections as it will be their turn to produce the council helmsman following the age long zoning system of the area.

The position was contained in a communiqué reached at the end of the 2nd Consolidation Meeting of Ukpum Minya IV held on May 16, 2015 at Mkpat Enin Civic Centre. According to the communiqué, although Ukpum Minya as a clan has clinched the chairmanship position twice just like Ikpa Ibom and Ibiaku clans, Ward IV of Ukpum Minya has never produced a any elected council chairman, member state or national assembly since creation of Mkpat Enin on May 3, 1989.

A brief history on the rotation of chairmanship position in Mkpat Enin since its creation reveals that Chief Stephen A. Ikpim (Ikpa Ibom) was chairman between May 1989 and July 1989; Mkpat Enin was under the administration of Dr. Gabriel Ukpim from Oruk Anam between July 1989 and January 1991 before Chief Richard Umoren (Ukpum Minya III) took over as chairman between January 1991 and November 1993.

Maj. Anthony Usoro (Rtd.) (Ukpum Minya III) was chairman between April 1994 and March 1996; Elder Joe Udobia (Ikpa Ibom) was chairman between March 1996 and August 1996; Bar. Aniefiok Udo Akpan (Ibiaku) was chairman between April 1997 and July 1998 while Akparawa Udosam Umoattan (Ukpum Minya II) was chairman between June 1999 and August 2002.

It is on record that the late Sir Maurice Ebe (Ukpum Minya I) was also a transition chairman in 2003; Bar. Ekong Sampson (Ikpa Ikono) was chairman between July 2003 and February 2004; Hon. Imo Udobia (Ikpa Ibom) was appointed caretaker chairman between March 2004 and April 2004; Bar. Ekong Sampson (Ikpa Ikono) took over again between May 2004 and April 2007; while Rt. Hon. Udobong Ekpo ran the affairs of council from April 2007 to June 2007.

Mr. Ubong Inyang was also a transition chairman between June 2007 and June 2008 (ukpum4) . Hon. Mfon Nkanteen (Ikpa Ibom) was chairman between June 2008 and September 2011; Mr. Ubong Ekefre (Ukpum Minya III) was appointed caretaker chairman between October 2011 and June 2012; while Hon. Ephraim Akpan (Ibiaku) was elected chairman from July 2012 till date.

A part of the communiqué reads;
“That since the creation of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area on 3rd May 1989 Ukpum Minya IV which is the seat of government and comprises five villages of Mkpat Enin, Ikot Ekpe, Ikot Abasi Ufon, Ikot Obio Akwa and Nung Ukim, has NEVER produced an elected chairman of the local government.

“That since the next local government chairmanship position has been zoned to Ukpum Minya Clan, it is the turn of Ward IV to produce an elected local government chairman for the first time since the creation of Mkpat Enin as other Wards in the Clan have already had their turn”.

According to the people, their inability to produce an elected council chairman or clinch any significant political position in the state is responsible for the deplorable state of facilities In the area, adding that such facilities like the Community Secondary School, Mkpat Enin, Housing Units, markets & roads are facing imminent collapse.

PROTEST ROCKS UNIVERSAL ENERGY

… As Workers Sealed off Headquarters, Halt Production

Frustrated by the unlabour practices of its Management, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) branch of the Universal Energy Resources Limited (UERL), sealed off the company’s Headquarters, Uyo, to protest the development and assault by the Finance Director, Mr. Basil Monwe.

Gathered as early as 7am, the aggrieved workers chanted solidarity songs and moved peacefully with placards that read: “We condemn Management unwillingness to negotiate Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Union. This is anti-Labour; Who owns Universal Energy? Is it Akwa Ibom State Government or Seven Energy? Akwa Ibom must know; Stop threat to life, victimization, tribal sentiment, FD must go; Universal Energy/Seven Energy Management does not respect communiqués and tripartite agreements; Say no to Seven Energy Slavery; Seven Energy don’t kill UERL.”

Top on the minds of the protesters were the issue of abuse of its members by the Finance Director, Mr. Basil Monwe; casualization of staff and outsourcing of manpower, and over deduction of its members’ allowances and pension. Also, the protesters expressed their displeasure over what they described as ‘unLabour disposition’ of its Management, which recently announced commencement of crude oil production from its Stubb Creek Field following the approval to embark on delivery of oil through the ExxonMobil’s Qua Iboe Terminal, which came on stream in early February 2015.

Lamenting a promised First-Oil-Bonus, a protester, who does not want his name published, said “there is only one solution to this problem. The Management must be sincere to all its policies thereby treating its staff as human.” When contacted, the branch Chairman of the Union, Comrade Edidiong Uyouko, said the protest was as result of “Management consistent and deliberate refusal to re-negotiate on expired Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that is subsisting, non-implementation of clauses in the CBA, refusal to address 26 outstanding wage re-opener items.” “Our protest today is as a result of Management refusal to honour and implement tripartite agreement, victimization of our Union members by the Finance Director, Mr. Basil Monwe, refusal to train staff and unfair labour practices by Management,” he stressed.

Effort to speak with company’s Project Manager, Engr. Steve Okoko, proved abortive, however, its Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Aniefiok Iwaudofia, said the protest was a husband-wife quarrel, adding that Management was ever ready to better and improve working conditions and welfare of its staff Mr. Iwaudofia urged the protesters not to aid the destruction of life and property while bringing to bare their grievances and assured that Management was seriously looking into the issues raised by the union.

Akpabio Inaugurates Roads, Drainage Systems, Others Projects

By Essien Ndueso

As part of his promise to keep the state busy till the last day of his tenure, Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has continued his project commissioning as part of plans to mark a colourful transition to the incoming administration.

The Governor, his wife Mrs Ekaete Unoma Akpabio, along with the Governor-elect Udom Emmanuel and the state deputy governor Valerie Ebe, commissioned the first phase of the newly constructed and dualized Uyo-Ikot Ekpene road, the Aka-Etinan Road also adorned with street lights, a modern drainage system that spans 4.6 metres from the Ibom International stadium road to Obot Idim Ibesikpo on one side and from the Ibom Tropicana Center to Obot Idim on another side.

While commissioning the life-touching projects, Gov. Akpabio noted "we have brought Etinan local government closer to Uyo the capital city, and I congratulate the good people of Akwa Ibom state for having a focused administration which you brought into the state in 2007 and reelected in 2011.”
Akpabio made it clear that, “No matter what people say, the evidences are all on ground and the difference is very clear. My performance is uncommon and unparalleled".

The governor insisted that he is fulfilled because he kept to his promises for Akwa Ibom people as his administration has constructed and commissioned numerous dualized roads with street lights, flyovers, bridges, and other appurtenances.

He furthered that, “just last week the federal executive council gave approval for the commencement of the Ibom deep seaport project in the state.”

The State Chief Executive revealed that with the approval, lots of companies were already indicating interest in partnering with the state on the project.

He maintained that “By the Grace of God we will start the Ibom deep seaport so that Akwa Ibom will be taken to the rest of the world," and gave the assurance that Udom Emmanuel will perform creditably well and even better than he has done in the last 8 years.

Other projects commissioned by the governor included an ultramodern car servicing workshop in government house, the government house fuel pump station which was relocated due to the nuisance it posed to the governor’s lodge.

The Governor at the various sites also thanked the various construction companies especially Julius Berger for delivering on schedule noting that the projects will stand the test of time.
Also with the Governor Senator Anietie Okon, the Senator-elect for Uyo senatorial district Bassey Albert Akpan, the Secretary to State Government Engr. Nkeruwem Ekanem, the Chief of Staff Etekamba Umoren, other members of the state executive council among others.

A total of 165 projects are marked for inauguration as part of the process to commemorate the transition to the next government and the 2015 Democracy day celebration.

[SPORTS] Akwa United Player’s Poor Welfare Package Responsible for Club’s Dismal Performance - Research

By Promise Etim

Following poor strings of results recorded by Akwa United FC of Uyo, fans of the Uyo based side are worried that the team may be heading for another stiff relegation battle. The team has only managed eight points from nine games and already struggling in the drop zone.

Research has revealed that performance of‪#‎GloNPFL‬ clubs has positive correlation with welfare of players. This can be evident in clubs like Kano Pillars of Kano, Enyimba International of Aba, Abia Warriors of Umuahia, Warri Wolves of Warri amongst others.

For Akwa United FC of Uyo, disclosing salaries and allowances players are paid is a major crime; none in public domain should be privy of such information, a club source said. The reverse is the case in some clubs across the country. The financial worth of Akwa United players are yet to be disclosed to the public since beginning of the season in March.

During the start of the 2013/2014 football season, the League Management Company (LMC), saddled with responsibility of organizing the league abolished sign on fees for players and asked clubs to split player’s sign on fees over a period of twelve months and pay the players monthly salaries.

The LMC also placed a benchmark of N150,000/Month for players in the league, meaning an average player in the league should get N1.8m in a year. A player that earned N3m as sign on fees for a season, should earn N250,000/Monthly, by the new rule.

Akwa United just like other teams, struggled last season to meet this financial obligation, given the fact that the club had already submitted its budget to Government as at the time the new rule was enacted.

It was believed that the club’s authorities will accommodate the new LMC salary benchmark in their budget this year to Government, given the LMC’s insistence on the new payment structure.

If reports emanating from certain sources are anything to go by, the club may be in for some difficult times as regards the welfare of its players. It has recently been rumoured that some players in the team receive as low as N20,000/Monthly, some N70,000/Monthly, while the highest paid player in the club, according to another source is in the region of N200,000/Monthly. Most of the players reportedly do not have contract papers.

The club reportedly receives about N400m/Annually from Akwa Ibom State Government, double of what many clubs competing in the continent budget for a season. If this figure is anyway close to reality, then it is necessary and worth asking some compelling questions.

Some players in the #GloNPFL earn close to N1m/Monthly, N800,000/Monthly, N500,000/Monthly, N400,000/Monthly and so on. These are big named players, experienced and vast, qualities you cannot find in the Uyo based club. If I may ask, why can’t Akwa United recruit these sorts of quality players? IS it that the club cannot pay or sustain quality players? No wonder, it has been referred to as a breeding ground for other teams.

For a team that traded off the likes of Ezekiel Bassey, Ubong Ekpai, Mfon Udoh, Godspower Aniefiok, Kufre Ebong etc, and brought in relatively poor quality players as replacement, one can be forced to say such team has no vision, target and objective. When other clubs are busy scheming on how to secure continental tickets, Akwa United’s focus is to maintain its status as a professional league club year in, year out. This is evident in the club’s fight for survival in the past three seasons.

Last season, players of the team protested non-payment of salaries and allowances at Government House, which our listening Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio responded immediately and ordered the release of N200m to the club authorities to clear debts owed players.

As a concerned citizen of the state and an ardent follower of the #GloNPFL, I am constrained to ask certain prevailing questions as thus:

#1. Why can’t the public be privy of what Akwa United players are paid?

#2. Do Akwa United players have contract papers, bonding them with the club?

#3. Why is the club not moving forward? Is it poor efficiency on the part of management or lack of funds to run the club?

#4. Does Akwa United have a plan/target for the current season?

#5. What must be done to salvage Akwa United from dwindling?

These were the words of the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Deacon Aniekan Umanah, during a special media interactive session, Sunday, in Uyo, the State capital.

However, with less than a dozen day to the exit of Governor Godswill Akpabio as the State Chief Executive, the State mouthpiece is of the opinion that so much have been achieved in all sectors and encapsulated into what has been generally referred as the Uncommon Transformation of the State.

While lauding Journalists in the State for the unwavering support they gave to the outgoing administration, Umanah, solicited "same level of support and cooperation to the incoming Government of Deacon Udom Gabriel Emmanuel", stressing that "no government can succeed without the support of the people".

Meanwhile, programs and activities lined up for the smooth transition to the incoming administration had already kick-started, Saturday, 16th May, with inauguration of some projects at the College of Education, Afaha Nsit, Nsit Ibom LGA.
